Sinfonietta (2007)

This three movement work was written for the Cheltenham Symphony Orchestra and was designed to display the skills of that orchestra and its individual players. Like the cello concerto it was recorded in Tewkesbury Abbey and I tried, in composing this work, to take into account the wide and reverberant sound of this large building’s acoustic.

This is a shot of the CSO rehearsing in Tewkesbury Abbey.

This excerpt is the third movement. It is shot through with complex rhythmic patterns which run headlong into a solid brass chorale before the music subsides down to a quiet and peaceful coda that fades away into the vast, silent space.
